Jump 10: Devil Survivor - The End of the Lockdown, The Beginning of the War

We met up with Naoya and I had him explain where we needed to be and what we would have to do. I didn’t feel like indulging his ego and thankfully he decided not to mess around with his explanation. I learned that I was the reincarnation of Abel, and he Cain. The reason Naoya said I was here because God loved and chose me. I knew the gist of the old story, Cain kills his brother Abel, and became a bit wary of Naoya because of the frequency he would call be brother growing up and even during the lockdown. He assured me that while a reincarnation of Cain, he had no intention of repeating the mistakes the Cain of old made. I decide to put my trust in him and plan the next day’s events.

The first order of business upon waking, was to defeat Jezebel, the Bel residing inside of Amane. I didn’t want to engage in any unnecessary battles with the Shomonkai, so I had Karen and Psychic retrieve her. Naoya was impressed with the allies I had gained, and mused that this would be easier than he had ever anticipated. Karen and Psychic came back with Amane, having to defeat Remiel before making their escape. I explained what we were planning to Amane, and asked for her cooperation to free humanity from any further ordeals sent by God or demons. I used the fact that she didn’t want numerous people to die from the lockdown and she reluctantly agreed since we had the power to just kill her and defeat Jezebel that way. Remiel was too weak to even put up a fight while restraining Jezebel and had no choice but to let us do what we wanted. We knocked Amane unconscious to have an easier time accessing her soul. Naoya used the COMPs to send four of our minds into Amane’s soul. Myself, Naoya, Alice and Atsuro.

Being inside a soul was similar to being inside a person’s mind, but still vastly different. We ended up in a garden, with an unconscious Amane being its only inhabitant. Before we could approach her Jezebel appeared and claimed that she’d never lose control of Amane’s soul. She let us know that any damage done to her would affect Amane, effectively making her a hostage within her own soul. Naoya told us to attack Jezebel anyway, the pain would allow Amane to regain her senses and open Jezebel for the finishing blow. Alice used her pactio artefact to keep Amane healed as we assaulted Jezebel. Kaido kept all the weaker demons she summoned away as Naoya and I dealt with Jezebel. Once Amane was able to regain control of her soul and break the bond between her and Jezebel the Bel was desperate to not be defeated. She summoned fake Amanes to try and take her soul over again. Alice kept Amane safe as I dealt the finishing blow to the demonic rose that was Jezebel.

Leaving Amane’s soul, the angel Remiel had also left her and had appeared before the group. He wanted to know what we planned on doing and I made it clear that if he didn’t run back to God I’m make him wish he was in the demon realm instead. He said I’d regret this decision and left. Naoya informed us that the Four Heavenly Kings of Tokyo were our next targets since they were supporting a barrier that made it impossible to summon Babel, the server to the demon summoning program, to Earth. Bishomon was the first King on our list to defeat. We went to the temple where he resided and I attempted to negotiate with him and possibly come up with a deal. He could sense my resolve, as well as the power the group possessed and agreed to talk things out first. I explained my plan to become King of Bel and remove the threat of both God and demons from the future of humanity. As one of the protectors of Japan and one responsible for maintain the wall between the human and demon worlds he was torn. In the end, he agreed to lift the barrier only if the other two remaining Devas agreed as well. If not, then we would have to fight to get the outcome we desired.

Agreeing to those terms, Bishomon contacted the other two Devas and we were able to meet with them and negotiate some terms. It took a little over an hour, but somehow, our side managed to plead our case strongly enough to convince Koumokuten and Zouchou to believe in us. The three remaining Devas lifted the wall between the two worlds and even became demons we could summon via our COMPs as a final sign of trust.

The time had come to assault the Shomonkai headquarters, but there was another obstacle in our path, Belzaboul. More commonly known as the “Lord of the Flies” and Beelzebub, he vowed to strike us down in the name of Belberith. His army of flies were very annoying, but with everyone that was on our side, the overall power difference made up for his legions of flies. Another Bel was defeated, leaving only Belberith once we were ready. Before we could continue our assault on the Shomonkai the angels Sariel and Anael barred our path. Upset that the government had chosen to wait and see what happens in our endeavors, they took it upon themselves to stop us. Naoya gave in to his anger a bit during the fight, but it mattered little in the end. The two fled when they realized they couldn’t win. It was our victory, and nothing seemed able to stand in our way.

That is however, until he showed up. The Morning Star, the Lord of Chaos, the Almighty Darkness, Lucifer himself. When he appeared and challenged us even I was shaking a bit. He emanated with a power mortals can’t even dream of and needless to say, not even Naoya had any sarcastic remarks about the situation. He was here, and the only thing we could do is defeat him in combat, or die. I took a look at everyone, a look of uncertainty I hadn’t seen on their faces before. I took a deep breath, and put on an air of false confidence as I gave everyone their orders.

Lucifer hadn’t come alone, and over half of the group had to be in charge of dealing with his subordinates. Alice, Karen, Leo, and I were the ones who’d be up against Lucifer. Flyer took command of the other group and kept everyone fighting optimally. It made me proud knowing I had been right to choose her to act in my stead. That feeling alone wasn’t enough to assuage my worries however, as the battle was not going to be easy. At first, Lucifer tested our magical defenses with a barrage of elemental spells of the highest caliber in this world. It was all I could do to shield everyone from his assault, the power of those attacks not lost on me even though I canceled them out. Alice wasted no time in casting some of her most powerful spells from the start, barraging Lucifer with high level ice magic she learned from Evangeline. Karen and Leo proceeded to tag team him in close quarters combat. Karen taking point as she’s more durable. Combining the various martial arts she knew and shrugging off blows like she was Jack Rankan, Karen held nothing back as she took the lead in the melee assault on Lucifer. Leo provided close range support in the forms of fire attacks, and some techniques he and Karen had practiced for times like this.

I couldn’t let myself be outdone by my companions of course, so I took aspects of both methods of attack. By infusing my body with magic and combining it with my conduit powers, I continually chanted the incantations to spells in my mind while striking Lucifer with my magically enhanced body. Releasing the spells at almost point blank range to ensure that they hit. We seemed to be doing something to him, pushing him back and damaging him. But then he started laughing out of amusement and with a swipe of his wings pushed us all back. He was surprised we could do so much to him so fast and rewarded us with unleashing more of his power.

Lucifer cast Megidoladyne. It wasn’t just directed at the four of us attacking him, but at everyone. Black Frost and Amane nearly died from the attack and most of the others were injured by it pretty badly too. Even with my magic cancel, I still took some form of damage from it, although it was significantly less that what the others had to deal with. Alice already knew what she had to do, and became the healer we needed. With her artifact, she was able to bring everyone back to top fighting condition. Unfortunately for us, Lucifer wasn’t just starting to use the strongest spell, but also had increased his resistance to physical attacks. Karen could no longer harm him efficiently. This was a huge problem for us, and required a quick change of strategy to maintain our offensive. Alice couldn’t return to attacking with magic because Lucifer could use Megidoladyne again at any point, and magic was not the group’s strong suit as a whole.

In the end, I had to call Yuzu, Amane and Midori to direct their magical attacks at Lucifer. Karen took their places battling Lucifers minions, of which there were now more, and Leo continued to attack with fire. I kept Lucifer’s attention on myself and used even more magic to augment my body so I could hurt him. It took a lot longer to get him to play his final card, and Megidoladyne nearly wiped us out on a couple of occasions. But we were somehow still standing when he brought forth all the power he was willing to use. Megidoladyne. If I had thought he was abusing the spell before, I would have been wishing he went back to the frequency he was using previously. He continually cast the spell at seemingly every opportunity, stretching the limits of Alice’s healing magic and wearing us down immensely. For the first time, even with all of my powers available to me, I thought I might die.

It was a closer battle that I expected, and if I hadn’t thought to combine everyone’s magic together and strike at the same time Lucifer would have very well killed us all. In the end he wasn’t going all out, and made me realize how powerless I still am. Without my friends I would have been just another person that failed to meet his expectations. As a reward for defeating him we gained the right to summon an aspect of himself as an ally, and my authority as the King of Bel would be boosted after I defeat Belberith and take the throne. Everyone was exhausted after the battle, and I wasn’t sure we were in a condition to fight Belberith. Lucifer, having planned for this, stopped the flow of time for us to recover. It was strange. Time was passing, yet not. When we were back at full strength Lucifer left and the flow of time returned.

It was finally time to face the last Bel, Belberith. After going through the ordeal that was Lucifer, nothing else that could be thrown at us could stand a chance. We climbed the building the Shomonkai were using for their headquarters and reached the top. Once we got there, Amane’s father announced his resolve to their cause and sacrificed himself to summon Belberith. At first Belberith was extremely arrogant, and believed we stood no chance since he was strengthened by the prayers of the Shomonkai. But all it took was bringing the aspect of Lucifer out to show Belberith he was outmatched in every way. We took him down with more confidence than anything else we had faced. All that was left was to summon Babel.

Once we were prepared I looked inside of myself and found the power that would allow me to summon Babel to the world. It came down and rested inside the building, summoning demons and declaring that I had to defeat it to claim the power that I now had the right to. Getting to, and defeating it was no problem. What made things a little more complicated was that we had to defeat all of the Bels again before facing Babel’s true form. The only one that could have given us trouble was Beldr with his immortality still posing the same problem, but I still had the devil’s fuge. Taking the Bels out was the beginning of the end for my ascension to the throne of Bel. Babel was strong, but it was defeated like the Bels in the end and I was finally the King of Bel. I felt the power, the innate authority over demons I had, and under Naoya’s prompting, called the demons in Tokyo to me. They ceased their attacking of humans and gathered around the building. An army awaiting for their king to lead them into battle. The battle was won, and the war against God would commence soon, or so I thought.

We had taken the rest of the last day of the lockdown to celebrate and relax. Naoya was worried that God would attempt to use my human weakness to remove me from the picture and he was right. The next day, the lockdown was still in place for some reason. That reason being the angels’ pressure on the government. Mettatron himself, the one closest to God announced that the lockdown would be lifted if I was killed. Swarms of people were out for blood, and Naoya said I was at another crossroads. To kill, or not to kill. I became the Overlord of Bel for humanity’s sake, I wasn’t about to start killing those I wished to save. It took a majority of the day, and we even had to retreat at times when the masses didn’t want to attempt to listen to us, but in the end, we got the people on our side. All that was left was fighting Mettatron.

Mettatron was around the same size as Lucifer, and closest to him in power than any of the other foes we faced. The battle was hard, but in the end we bested him. Unfortunately he wasn’t in the mood to play fair and was about to smite everyone in the lockdown regardless of out victory. Then, it finally happened. I fully awoke to the power of Bel. I summoned Beldr and Belial to quickly wipe out the remaining angels Mettatron had summoned to aid him. This is what prompted his retreat back to heaven. He had an army to build, after all, I was challenging God. By proving myself there, humanity would no longer be swept up in the war between angels and demons. Having awakened, it was time to go build my own army and descend into the demon world. I said my goodbyes to everyone, some more casual than others. With affairs settled in the human world, Black Frost, Leo and Alice were able to accompany me, the former being a native demon and the latter two having forms close enough that it would pose no problem.

Peaceful days may have ended, but not even God could stop me from surviving. You’ll be seeing me in the next jump. I have a war to win.

You who are a son of man,

yet became king of Pandemonium…

You desire to crush underfoot

the old order and begin the new,

forsaking His command passed down

since the dawn of time.

You have chosen to revolt against the Lord,

you and I are now enemies.

If you truly wish to protect man,

bear your burden and fight to the end…

Until the day when fate chooses the one

that shall survive.
